Charlottesville

Posted OnAugust 17, 2017 byadmin

Like so many across the country and around the globe, we were horrified and saddened to watch events unfold in Charlottesville, Virginia this last weekend.

Like so many across the country and around the globe, we were horrified and saddened to watch events unfold in Charlottesville, Virginia this last weekend.  We believe in the rights to exercise free speech and to assemble peaceably, but condemn in the strongest terms all views and actions rooted in racism and bigotry.  We were horrified to watch the situation degrade into violence and shocked to learn an Omidyar Network contractor was one of those injured by the vehicular assault.

Nazism, the KKK, white supremacy, and any group assembled under a banner of prejudice and discrimination have no place in our society and must be opposed in the strongest possible terms.

This past weekend is a painful, blunt reminder of how far we have yet to go in addressing our national moral failures.  We must summon the courage to look at what is happening in our society.  We must address the fear and ignorance underlying the destructive views and hateful acts that are threatening us.

We offer peace to all those hurting from the events in Charlottesville, and, in particular, our colleague.

And we offer our heartfelt condolences to those who lost a loved one.  Our prayers and thoughts go out to the families of Heather D. Heyer, H. Jay Cullen, and Berke M. M. Bates.
